Dog people generally think their dog belongs to the best group of dogs. For those that want proof, that leads to wonder what the most popular breeds are. If your money was on the labrador retriever as the most popular dog breed, I regret to inform you that a few years ago they were pushed out of their 30-year dynasty. They have been topped by a smaller, flat-faced breed that has been steadily rising in popularity since the early 2010’s.
Although there do tend to be fixtures in the most “pupular” lists, like labs, goldens, and German Shepherds, there’s always a few breeds that significantly rise and fall in popularity over time.
The latest data from the American Kennel Club (AKC) is for 2025. In case it wasn’t clear above, labs came in at number two. Read on to see who beat them out.

I apologize to all you pug- and Boston Terrier- loving people, but neither of those breeds even cracked the top ten. Bostons ranked 23 and Pugs ranked 38. The most popular breed is currently the French Bulldog. Frenchies are compact, friendly dogs suitable for apartment or city living. They are known for their bat-like ears, charming expression, and easygoing personality. Playful and low-maintenance, this adaptable breed is a favorite for people seeking a loyal, social pet.
Notable Rankings
The breed that jumped the most spots (29) was the Wirehaired Vizsla. These dogs are medium-large sized and good with families and children. A breed that jumped a surprising five spots, possibly because of the gorgeous winner at the AKC National Championship in 2024, was the Giant Schnauzer. These dogs are on the larger side and very high energy with high mental stimulation needs.
What Breed is Right for You?
Remember that popular breeds tend to be popular for a reason, but that doesn’t mean that every breed is right for every human. Before adding a dog to your family, do your research. Look at pet rescues and adoption and fostering and mixed breeds. Look into the pet’s history, the breeder, and the breed. Just because a dog is not popular does not mean it isn’t a good choice for you or your family. Mixed breeds are not even on the AKC list, and speaking from experience, my first beloved dog’s breed doesn’t even crack the top 50.
