Summer is here! The cool mornings and evenings are an excellent time for you and your pup to escape the heat. However, snakes can be nestled up in bushes and may pose a risk to your dog. If the unthinkable happens and you’re unsure of your plan of action, this guide will help you recognize the signs of a snake bite and know what steps to take.
Snake Bite Symptoms:
A venomous snake bite can cause symptoms such as sudden weakness, excessive drooling, lethargy, vomiting, bleeding or bruising. While a venomous snake may “dry bite” (releasing no venom), it’s always recommended to treat it as if the venom is there.
A nonvenomous snake typically causes pain, swelling, bruising around bite site, and limping. Even if the snake is nonvenomous, it is still recommended to take your dog to the vet. A nonvenomous snake bite can still restrict blood flow or the airway.
If Your Dog Is Bitten:
If your dog happens to be bitten by a venomous snake, here are some steps you can take to ensure their well-being before getting to a vet. While these are helpful short-term measures, it’s always safest to have your dog evaluated by a veterinarian.
- Keep your pet still. Your pet moving may allow the venom to work faster, increasing their symptoms. If possible, carry your dog to the car to limit as much movement as possible.
- Remove your dog’s collar if the bite is around the neck area to prevent constriction if the area swells.
- Avoid home remedies like sucking out the venom, ice, antihistamines, constriction of the bite site in any way. These methods have been shown to be ineffective and can lead to your dog not receiving the care they need. For more information on these methods, check out the American Kennel Club’s guide on snake bites.
- If it’s safe, take a picture of the snake. The vet will be able to diagnose, and your dog will receive more accurate care if the vet knows the type of snake.
A snake bite can be scary, but recognizing the signs and knowing what to do, it can save your dog’s life. If you found this article helpful, check out our Instagram, Peak City Puppy for service updates, trivia, doggy spotlights, and more!
