The time of year when the blistering heat starts to mellow to cooler nights and pleasantly warm days with lower humidity is one of my favorites. The color scheme that accompanies the weather change is also a big plus for the autumn season.
If you have been contemplating adding a daily dog walk to your fur baby’s schedule this is the perfect time of year. Dogs, with their added fur, enjoy the cooler temperatures. Mornings are often brisk and yet seasonably comfortable. The air smells of falling leaves and those already on the ground provide a satisfying crunch as you stroll. Mid-day walking breaks in the sunshine are great with the less humid crisper fall air. And an added perk is less concern about hot asphalt for paws. Evenings again start to cool down and provide a nice temperature. Just remember to mindful of the earlier sunsets making it dark earlier.
Safety for you and your dog is just as important as the exercise and together time. While your dog is getting their sniffs and in and peeing everywhere to let other dogs they were there being mindful of surroundings is important. If you start out in the dark in the morning or end up in the dark in the evening it can be helpful to have reflective bright clothing and dog collars and a flashlight. Make sure you check the weather before leaving as the change can often be abrupt. If it turns hot make sure you have water available depending on the length of your walk.
If you haven’t been walking daily now is the perfect time to start. Most dogs love a walk. Neighborhoods are filled with walking people and dogs right now. So much to sniff and see all while spending time with their favorite person. And the exercise and camaraderie are good for you both! Spending time outside has been proven to lower stress, boost mood, and improve sleep. And now to your dog, who already thinks you are the best, you are a downright hero.
