Peak City Puppy DNA Tests for Dogs Blog Post

If you have a mixed breed dog, or even if you are fairly sure you know your dog’s breed, you may have considered a DNA test for your pup. DNA tests can give you tons of information on your dog including their full breed makeup, genetic information on their health, breed specific traits, and more. DNA testing can help tell you if your pup is predisposed to certain diseases or health conditions, a concern for certain breeds as they are genetically predisposed to certain types of cancer, hip dysplasia, or to being overweight.

Testing your pup’s DNA can also give you insight into their personality, why their fur is the color or texture that it is, why their eye color is what it is, and can even help you make choices concerning your dog in the future. Choices such as what to feed, how often to feed, and a deeper understanding of portions for your dog.

At Peak City Puppy we have come to know and love dogs of all kinds, ages, sizes, and breeds. Finding out your dog’s ancestry is information that can help you understand your dog better, while keeping in mind that we all are more than the sum of our parts (or histories). If you’re eager to learn more about your dog’s DNA, here’s a list of the top-rated and highest recommended dog DNA tests. The options fit most budgets ranging from $69 to $200, and are delivered in 2 to 4 weeks. Let us know what you find out!

Wisdom Panel

The Wisdom Panel test is administered by swabbing the inside of your pooch’s cheek for 15 seconds. Then you package it up in the box and ship it with prepaid shipping to their lab for testing. In the lab, a process known as genotyping will take place. Genotyping is a complex process in which the genetic information you collected from your dog’s cheek is analyzed for unique markers which can provide vital information on your dog. Wisdom Panel analyzes your dog’s DNA at 100,000 markers across the genome. After a few weeks your results will be available to view.

The veterinarians and scientists that work for Wisdom Panel have over 15 years of experience so you know your sample is in good hands. At Wisdom Panel, they will analyze the data gathered from the lab and give you insight into your dog’s ancestry, traits, and health. This information can be used to show breed, yes, but can also be used to help show if your dog is predisposed to certain health conditions. This gives you a better idea of how to care for your dog now and for years to come.

This product has been featured by CNN, USA Today, People, PC Mag, Yahoo! News, Reader’s Digest and more. Wisdom Panel has thousands of positive reviews, most of which mention how easy it is to use, and how accurate it is. Wisdom Panel offers two options:

Embark

Embark was started by two brothers who possess a love and passion for understanding everything about dogs. Since founding Embark, their pioneering work with dogs has revealed origin stories of the domestic dog dated back to 15,000 years ago in Central Asia. They have made advancements in every corner of the world helping to uncover the genetic basis for many diseases and traits.

The founders of Embark began by learning the genetic markers of village dogs across the globe in 2007. Since starting this journey they have worked with National Geographic, the National Science Foundation, and more studying dogs in 40 countries worldwide. Their work has provided key insights into the origin of dogs, genetic diversity, and the modern domestic house pet. Including, analyzing 5,000 DNA samples from the Cornell Veterinary Biobank to find associations with specific health conditions and traits.

Embark’s test kit was developed by veterinarians in partnership with Cornell University. The test is accurate down to 5% of your dog’s breed. This test is administered by a swab of the inside of your dog’s cheek and can be returned to the Embark lab with prepaid shipping labels included in your purchase.
