Best Dog Friendly Parks in the Triangle

What’s not to love about the Triangle? Within driving distance of the beach AND the mountains. Temperate winters. Home of the 2026 Stanley Cup Champion Carolina Hurricanes. Greenway trails. Blue skies and trees galore. Great restaurants and a lively downtown. March Madness. Of course it stands that the Triangle also has a number of great dog parks.

Wake Forest: Flaherty Dog Park

Flaherty dog park is located in Wake Forest, on North White St. There are two separate areas, one for large dogs and one for small dogs. There is lots of shaded area as well as picnic tables to sit at that are also shaded. There is a slightly wooded area, and lots of room to run. The park has dishes for water and water fountains. Entrances are double gated to keep pets safe during entry and exit. There is also a baseball field and a children’s playground in the park.

North Raleigh: Millbrook Exchange Park

Located on Spring Forest Road (yes, to this day I don’t know why it can’t either be on Millbrook Rd or called Spring Forest…) this gem is hidden back off a greenway trail in the woods. Because the area is wooded, there is shade from the trees. There are two separate areas; the area for small dogs is on the small side, but there is a dog walk ramp that is fun. This park also has double gates to help keep dogs from getting out by accident. The area for large dogs is bigger with lots of open room to run. There will often be balls there for games of fetch.

Downtown: Dix Dog Park

Located on Umstead Drive, this park has a large open grassy area that is great for running. There are two areas, one for small dogs and one for large dogs. There are water stations on site and bathrooms nearby. This park also has a number of wonderful attractions including a sunflower field and an epic playground for kids. There are opportunities for on-leash fun either before or after the dog park visit.

Holly Springs: Sugg Farm

Located on Grigsby Ave, this park is an acre and features a lot of pine trees and shade. There are two fenced areas, one for small dogs under 30 pounds and one for large dogs. The area for smaller dogs is not as large. The entrance is double gated for safety and there is a water station. The park is near beautiful Bass Lake Park if you are looking for a leashed walk before or after the dog park visit.

Stay Safe

When going to a dog park, make sure your fur baby is up-to-date on their vaccinations and in the correct area. It might seem like fun to take your small dog into the large dog area or vice versa, but those rules protect your dog and everyone else’s dog, too. You may know your dog is friendly to all, but not all dogs are. It is no fun to have a tiny dog panic because a huge dog is suddenly lumbering over them.

Unleash your dog before you enter the park so that they are on even ground with the dogs already in the park. Make sure to also pay attention to your dog and be ready to intervene. Most dogs are friendly and just getting to know each other, but sometimes fights can break out. Pay attention to the dogs and signs of aggression; keep an eye on your dog!
