November, the month which hosts our holiday centered on giving thanks, Thanksgiving, is traditionally a month of gratitude. Our pets give us so many reasons for gratitude as most pet families already know. Just a few of those are the daily comfort, companionship, and joy they bring to our lives for the entirety of theirs.
What are some specific things for which you are thankful for your own dog or cat? Unconditional love and affection often top that list. Dogs are well known for their nonjudgmental support and love. It does not matter how long you have been away; they are always excited to see you again and let you know. Our furry family know how to live in the moment and experience joy in the simplest things. And when we are with them, we can focus on what is happening right now instead of our own worry and stress. Take the walk, play fetch, cuddle on the couch and be in the moment with your pet while you are able.
Our pets not only provide us with connection but also with purpose. They depend on you for food, exercise, comfort and love. Caring for the family pet provides you and the pet structure, routine, exercise, and maybe a little fresh air. Spending time for daily dog walk or morning kitty snuggles not only provides routine but keeps us from being lonely. They can also be a great excuse to avoid unwanted social activities! Who can be mad you can’t leave your beloved pet alone that long.
Another common reason to be thankful for our pets is the daily laughter they provide. Do you share anecdotes of their shenanigans with family and friends or maybe even online? Being happy with your pet who provides us with laughter is a great reason for appreciation. And not only do they make us laugh they provide us with comfort. Nothing provides comfort like good snuggle with your dog or cat. Just seeing their face can make you smile.
All of the above are great reasons to be thankful for your pet every day, but especially in a season of gratitude. But pets also good for your health and stress levels. Being a pet owner improves both your physical and mental health. Research has shown petting an animal can lower blood pressure, and many studies show having a dog can be beneficial to your heart health. There is a definite correlation for pet owners to have lower levels of depression, stress, and loneliness. While this is rarely the reason people obtain a pet, it is certainly a reason to be thankful for that pet.
