Routines Help Keep Dogs Happy
Let’s face it families thrive on a good amount of daily routine. And your dog is part of the family. Routine creates consistency, provides structure, decreases anxiety, reinforces good behaviors, and can increase your bond due to shared daily activities. This applies to all the family members both the human and the furry ones.
Most of us live busy lives. We love our families and pets. Keeping all the balls in the air with a daily juggling routine can sometimes seem precarious. A routine can assist to keep the jugging at a minimum and the household running smoothly. Well, smoother anyway!
How does this benefit your dog? A dog that knows what to expect on a daily basis is a more well behaved and is a happier dog. Dogs need certain things every day just like humans. And they rely on us to help meet those needs because, you know, no opposable thumbs. They need potty breaks several times a day, food, water, exercise, play, mental stimulation, and love. Keeping those things consistent will lead to a dog that knows what to expect. You family dog wants to please you as you are the center of their world. Providing them a consistent routine with positive reinforcement will help lead to a happy well-adjusted dog. They know a walk comes after food and are happy to wait, and of course they will remind you should you “forget”.
The best routines for your happy dog will depend on your particular family and dog. Some dogs need more exercise than other types of dogs. Be cognizant of how much exercise your dog will need. Consistency helps breed trust with the dog, the kids, and all the members in your family. If everyone knows what needs to be done and works together to make it happen life is better. There are always the one-off days, minor disasters, and chaos of forgotten chores or events. But an everyday normal routine ensures at least the dog gets feed, has fresh water, has had a potty break so accidents are minimized, and a certain amount of activity daily. For your family that could be twice daily walks or once daily walks, or playing fetch in the yard. The key is making sure the activity is a good amount for you dog. They will look forward to that time every day to spend time with you. Having routine meal times help keep the potty breaks routine as well. This is of course important if you are not with your dog all day.
