Dog drinking water on a hot day (1)Summer brings longer days and more time outside, but with that extra sunshine comes rising temperatures that can put your dog at risk. With July being one of the hottest months of the year, monitoring your dog’s heat exposure is more important than ever. Read below to identify the signs of heat exhaustion, tips on how to modify walks, and fun activities to keep your dog hydrated.

Signs of Heat Exhaustion

Your dog may not want to stop walking or playing in the backyard, but if they’re headed towards heat exhaustion, there are some signs to watch out for. Your pup may be overheating if they excessively pant, become lethargic, or have excessive drooling. If your dog starts to exhibit these signs, make sure you give them water and immediately bring them indoors.

Modify Walks

Modifying walks is a great way to get your pup some exercise while keeping them safe. When the sun is beating down, stick to sidewalks with lots of shade or walk your dog in the grass to avoid burning their paws. Shortening the walk to 10-15 minutes will allow your pup to stretch their legs and go potty without being at risk of heat exhaustion. To find out if the heat is too much for your pup, place your hand on the street for 10 seconds. If the 10 seconds aren’t bearable for you, it’s not ideal for your pup!

Activity: Cooling Mat

If your pet loves sunbathing, then a cooling mat is a great trick to keep them comfortable. All you need is a waterproof pillowcase, water, and a towel. Soaking the towel in water, then wring it out until most of the excess water is gone. Then, place the towel in the freezer until the towel is completely frozen solid After the towel is frozen, place the towel inside the pillowcase. This cooling mat can be used under your dog’s bed or in their favorite lounging area outside.

Activity: Filled Ice Cubes

Filled ice cubes can cool your pet down while also ensuring hydration. To make this fun enrichment activity, all you need is an ice tray, water, and add-ins of your choosing. For dogs we recommend peanut butter or blueberries. All you need to do is put your add-ins into the ice cube tray prior to filling it up with water. Once you have your add-ins in the tray, pour the water and let it sit in your freezer until frozen solid. To minimize the mess, place the ice cubes in a doggie bowl. What an entertaining way to cool down!
